Red Riders on Top at Auckland Champs

When the sun finally came out last weekend at the Auckland Motocross championships at the Harrisville track in Pukekohe, the Team Honda Racing motocross squad were on top of their form.

The Pukekohe Motorcycle club had done an exceptional job grooming the track after the torrential rain which had fallen on Saturday.

The star of the weekend was Hawera’s Luke Burkhart, who took his Honda CRF450R to three amazing win in the National 500cc class, showing the motocross fraternity that he is most definitely “BACK”.

Burkhart was ably supported by Tauranga’s Peter Broxholme, also on a CRF450R, who picked up two seconds and a third.

Christchurch’s Justin McDonald had a good day on his Honda CRF250R in the National 250cc class, picking up second in races one and three and finished a gutsy thirteenth in race two after having his front end wash out on the slippery track.

Another “star” was, 12-year-old Courtney Duncan from Palmerston, who took three wins from three starts in the Women’s class on her Honda CR 85R.

“It was a fantastic day’s racing, on what turned into a very technical track after Saturday’s rain,” said team manager Shayne King after racing.

“Luke was amazing, when he finished 50 seconds in front in race one. All I could think was HONDA IS BACK” he added.
