Mx Honda Red Riders Continue to Shine at Rotorua

The weather in Rotorua had improved from Sunday’s qualifying and the earlier wind of Monday morning, for leg 2 of round one of the Demon Energy NZ Motocross Championships. The clouds and rain disappeared, leaving brilliant sunshine with a steady breeze.

Team Honda’s Peter Broxholme again started well in the MX1 class on his CRF450R, unfortunately he got a cross-rutt and stalled his machine on lap two and was passed by the hard charging King Brothers on their Yamahas. Broxholme recovered to re-pass Darryll and was chasing Damien, when he copped another mistake, allowing Darryll back in front. The battle continued with Broxholme coming home third. Which after some Subway-Yamaha Team orders and Damien being gifted 1st from Darryll, meant relegating Broxy to second overall for the day.

"I have never wanted to win so much, so I’m pleased but also a little frustrated with myself" said Broxholme after the race. "But it is only round one, we’re focused on winning races and the team is so supportive that I feel this is my chance." he added.

In the MX2 class, Christchurch’s Justin McDonald went from "Zero to Hero". Having finished 25th in race one sporting a strapped jaw, he was all fired up and led race two’s re-start right from the gate to take a well deserved win and the 25 points that go with it. Showing some real ‘loose-flair’ McDonald wowed the crowd with his style at the front, looking like a freestyler for most of the race.

Team-mate and winner of race one, Rotorua’s own Michael Phillips got a very bad re-start on his CRF250R, the first start was red flagged while he was leading the initial leg 2 first lap due to a gate malfunction. So the second start saw him in 8th after lap 2, but he slowly fought his way back to a very creditable 3rd, with best lap times and the overall win for the day.

"It was great to get the win after all the trouble this morning," said McDonald from his pits.

In the combined 125cc two-stroke and Under 21 class, the battle was again between reigning champion, Cambridge’s Damien King (Yamaha) and Taupo’s young hot shot Cameron Dillon on his 2007 model Honda. King took the win to lead the overall class, while Dillon took another second to give him 1st in the Under 21s and second overall in 125cc- not bad for a 16 year old on a 2 year old machine.
