HONDA'S CRAIG ANDERSON LEADS OZ MOTOX CHAMPIONSHIP
Entering the meeting with the series leader's red number plate, Anderson laid down a 1:33.313 minute lap to qualify fastest for the third time in four rounds aboard his Honda CRF450R.
Taking the lead from the first jump in Race 1, Anderson and his main series rival Jay Marmont locked into a fierce battle, running wheel to wheel throughout the entire 30-minute moto with the pair switching back and forth in 1st and 2nd places. Lapping more than half the field, Anderson led into the final lap with an advantage of just 0.9 seconds, holding out Marmont to score a thrilling, well-earned race win.
Scoring the holeshot in Race 2, Anderson had stretched a 2.65-second advantage by the end of the first lap. The 12-time national champion began to move out from the pack, but Marmont reeled in the #100 machine to resume their Race 1. However this time Anderson maintained his advantage over Marmont. Marmont then came under fire from Anderson's team-mate Cheyne Boyd, who subsequently chased down Anderson for the race lead in the closing laps, followed through by Marmont. With the last lap board displayed, Anderson trailed Boyd and Marmont to secure the final podium position for Race 2.
Scoring equal points to Boyd, Anderson was awarded 2nd for the Round on countback, but
extended his series lead over Marmont by one point. The Woodstock Honda Thor team will now get ready to trek across the Nullabor Plains for Round 5 of the 2008 Australian Motocross Nationals on Sunday 1 June at Wanneroo in Western Australia.
CRAIG ANDERSON: "The track was different to every other year we've raced here. As it got
rougher it was weird, it got ruts where it doesn't normally get ruts and it was definitely tough.
Jay and I had the best battle in the first race. We were going at it all the way - it was an awesome race. Then Cheyne (Boyd) came out in the second race and just gave it to us - he rode awesomely. It would have been good to go one-one today and get some good points on Jay but we go away from here still with the series lead."
"Around where I live, the tracks are pretty well all hard-pack and the deep sand at Wanneroo is one of the toughest tracks in the world. It's rough, it's long and creates good racing, so we'll all have our work cut out for us in WA." Anderson concluded.
BRAD McALPINE, TEAM MANAGER: "We've extended the series lead again this weekend for Woodstock Honda, but with only five points the margin, it's still anybody's championship and we can't rest now. It's a long haul to WA, and with back-to-back rounds from Wanneroo to Murray Bridge, we've got less than a fortnight to prepare for the next two rounds, so it's a big job ahead of us."
